Mr. C. joined our Makers' Clubs again this week to teach us about different types of wrenches. We use wrenches, nuts, washers, and bolts this week!
Students in Makers' Club had been asking for a "free day" so, here it was! FREE MAKING DAY! The fun with styrofoam!!!
Did you know that there is a "Project of the Week" each week in the makerspace? Two of the projects are featured below: Pumpkin Investigations and the Playground Challenge!
This week in Makers' Club, second and third graders participated in our LEGO Challenge. Each student was given a card with directions. Most students were just happy when the "challenge" was over and they could free build with LEGOs!
We started to learn how to use tools this week! Thanks to Mr. C for joining Miss Kolis and Mrs. Wiesler in Makers' Club this week!
This week in the makerspace, students learned how to make catapults and simple rocket flyers. They were encouraged to launch a marshmallow into the mouth of their little sisters or a cotton ball at their cats.
This week, students in both second and third grades worked to solve the problem: "It's getting colder and the animals won't be able to find as much food outside." We made homemade bird feeders and hung them in the front of the school and in the Highland Island.
Students in both second and third grade LOVED engaging with the LEGO WeDo Kits. We were able to purchase these with a grant from the BBH Schools Foundation. Students loved engineering these working "robots!"
Week #3 in our new space --> Challenge: Build a stand for my phone out of marshmallows and toothpicks that is at least 6 inches tall and can hold my phone off the table for at least 6 seconds. (Problem? I have no phone stand! Imagine: How can I fix that problem with these materials? Brainstorm together. Create!)
Week #2: This week we were planning for and creating an animal, either real or fictional, with specific materials as an intro. to the design process.
Week 1 of the 2016-2017 School Year: "Tinkering"
Photos of the 2016-2017 Makerspace Room and Makers' Club coming soon! The club will start meeting on Thursdays (Second Grade) and Fridays (Third Grade) starting in September!
The Triple C Challenge: Using cubes, craft sticks, and cups, we completed different challenges in building. The students worked on the concepts of teamwork, balance, stability, cooperation, problem solving and MORE!
The students in Makers' Club made the decorations for the One Book, One School project this year. We made lots of candies to support the chocolate theme when we read The Chocolate Touch!
It's time for the WeDo LEGOS Intro. to Robotics! Thanks to the BBH Schools Foundation for the grant! Second and third graders LOVED these!
In our first week back in Jan. 2016, we started by making boats! Students had to use styrofoam, straws, toothpicks, paper, fabric, tape, and glue to make a boat that would fit in the container, hold up 4-6 quarters, and float for 10-15 seconds.
In the 12th week of Makers' Club in 2015, Mrs. Koepke brought the idea to use the giving season to make some gifts for others. Students in 2nd and 3rd grades had the chance to make dog and cat toys for animals at the Cleveland APL. Thanks to Mrs. Koepke and Mrs. Culotta for helping and HUGE thanks to Mrs. Koepke for delivering the goodies!
In the 10th and 11th weeks of Makers' Club this year, students made "electric dough!" This was a two week project as students engaged in making the "insulating dough" in the first week and then experimented with "conducting dough," battery packs, and LED lights the next week. Students made predictions and hypotheses about the dough this week as well.
During the 9th week of Makers' Club this year, students had a chance to "review" and re-make ANYTHING we'd already made so far this school year.
Week 8: It was the week of Halloween and students made monsters together. We asked them to challenge themselves and try to make the monster have "movable" arms or legs. Students also had a chance to share what they like about Makers' Club for a chance to be featured on Miss Kolis' twitter page (find it at @morgankolis).
In Weeks 6 and 7, second and third graders made "share crows" for the Highland Island! Each "share crow" was filled with bird seed and cereal to invite birds and animals to the Island.
Week 5: Marble Mazes!!! (It was also pajama day at school, can you tell?)
Week 4 Challenge: In groups of 3, using newspaper and tape, create a structure that you (and your group members) can get inside of at the same time.
In week #3, second and third graders worked together to make catapults!
In Week 2 of the Makers' Club this year, students in both second and third graders worked on sharing tools, problem solving, and learning from mistakes as they created decorative letters. Each student had to get a usable piece of cardboard, draw and cut out a letter (usually one of his/her initials) and then cover it with fabric.
Week #1 of the 2015-2016 school year was awesome! Second graders came to Room 26 ready to listen. They reviewed the rules of Makers' Club as 1. Be a good listener. 2. Share the materials. 3. Be careful with the tools. 4. Clean up your own mess. After the review of the rules, the second graders got to work on building a cell phone tower with toothpicks and marshmallows. Third Grade students brainstormed ideas about what a Makers' Space is and started their first project.
Our HD Makers cannot wait to get started!!! Makers' Club for the '15-'16 school year will start on Thursday, Sept. 10th for second graders and on Friday, Sept. 11th for third graders. We will again meet at the lunch and recess times on these days. Miss Kolis and Mrs. Wiesler have some great ideas for this year! We can't wait to see you!
